Welcome

We are pleased to welcome you to the 13th Scandinavian Conference on Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM), hosted by the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Iceland.

This year's conference theme, The road ahead? Industrial Engineering & Management in a shifting geo-political landscape , underscores the vital role of innovation and leadership in navigating rapid and disruptive change.

The program will explore the evolving relationship between political decision-making and the operational systems that underpin our industries and institutions—highlighting the need for both strategic governance and effective management. As a discipline, Industrial Engineering and Management remains a cornerstone of progress, continually expanding what’s possible. In an increasingly complex world, the ability to productively integrate cutting-edge engineering with resilient management practices will be critical to shaping a sustainable and adaptable future.

There will be keynotes, PhD paper presentations, roundtable discussions, debates, workshops and 'in-the-pipeline' presentations. Please see our call for sessions, call for papers (for PhD students) and program for more information.

Living in “Hot” Iceland – Optional Day Trip
Join us for an optional day trip around the Reykjanes Peninsula, where we will explore both the natural wonders and human ingenuity that define life in Iceland’s dynamic landscape.

We’ll depart at 08:00 (or 08:30) and return around 15:00.

Planned stops include:

  • Grindavík – Visit the town recently protected by levees built to guard against advancing lava flows.
  • Seltún Geothermal Area (Krýsuvík) – Experience the power of Iceland’s geothermal activity in a striking, colorful landscape.
  • Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel – Walk through one of Iceland’s largest and most accessible lava tubes, formed during a volcanic eruption over 5,000 years ago.
  • Hellisheiði Geothermal Power Plant – Discover how Iceland harnesses its geothermal energy for sustainable power generation.

This excursion offers a unique blend of geology, engineering, and culture — an ideal conclusion to the IEM conference, highlighting how Icelanders live and innovate amid one of the planet’s most active natural environments.

Estimated price: 13,000 ISK   - Participation is limited and the tour depends on sufficient interest.

The conference theme – The Road ahead – addresses the very nature of our field at the interface between technology and management.
This conference aims to address the importance of innovation and leadership in times of rapid change. Engineering is the cornerstone of progress, constantly expanding the realm of possibility. As we navigate the complexities of the new century, productively integrating innovative engineering and robust management practices will be essential.

We invite everybody to submit ideas for sessions to the conference revolving around IEM-research, IEM-education, or hot topics of significance for young scholars of the IEM-field. A session could be of any of the following formats: presentations, panel discussions, workshops, debates, and round table seminars.

Please submit your session proposals to: scaiem2025@hi.is before October 1, 2025.

Include the following information:
title, intended track (research, education, post-graduate education), type of session (roundtable, panel, presentations, workshop or debates), and a short description.

The conference sessions are designed to stimulate active participation among the attendees.

Session formats:

Presentations Session
At a presentation session, several presenters conduct a presentation each. All presentations are linked to one and the same overall topic and each presentation is accompanied by the opportunity for the audience to ask questions about or contribute with a new perspective on the presentation.

Panel Discussion Session
A panel discussion is a discussion before an audience, about a specific topic. The topic is discussed jointly by a number of panelists who contribute with different perspectives on the subject. A panel is led by a moderator and there should be room for the audience to ask questions to the panel participants and contribute more perspectives on the subject.

Debate Session
A debate is like a panel discussion, but between two contradition positions. Thus, there is a stronger emphasis on the differences between opinions, perspectives, standpoints, and arguments. The panel is led by a moderator/referee and there should be possibilities for the audience to ask questions to the debaters.

Workshop Session
In a workshop, the focus is on participant activity. A workshop begins with a presentation of a specific topic that is made by the workshop leaders. Then follow practical exercises involving all participants.

Round Table Discussions Session
A round table discussion is initiated by a shorter presentation of the session managers of a specific topic. Subsequently, discussions in smaller groups - one at each table - follow a number of different issues related to the subject. At each table there is a discussion manager who can, if necessary, stimulate the discussion on a specific issue. After a specified time, the participants change table / question. The topic and the questions are summarized at the end of the session in a dialogue between the discussion managers and the participants.

Lodging

  • Conference hotel: There is no conference hotel with special rates.  The event size does not meet hotel requirements for special rates.
  • Hotel quality: Most hotels in Iceland are high standard. You can often book fewer stars than you would elsewhere without sacrificing quality. Luxury hotels are expensive in Iceland.
  • Location: There are no hotels immediately adjacent to the University campus. Hotel Saga is now University student housing. For walking access, the city center is the best option. All conference activities—the sessions, reception, and conference dinner—take place on campus.
  • Apartments: Reykjavík has many short-term rentals on Airbnb and via Booking.com, which can be cost-effective for shared stays.

Transport Overview

Iceland is car-oriented, but Reykjavík has reliable bus services within the city and frequent connections to and from the airport.

Airport Transfers

  • 1–2 travelers: The airport bus is usually the cheapest and reasonably fast.
  • 3+ travelers: A taxi can be competitive and more convenient. To avoid overcharging, book with an established company such as Hreyfill for a fixed fare.

Getting Around Reykjavík

  • Car: Often the most flexible option.
  • Taxi: Not cheap, but viable for groups. Book via the Hreyfill app:
  • Bus (Strætó): Reliable city network.
    • Plan trips
    • Fares
    • Payment: Contactless card or the app (download link on Strætó site).
    • Tip: Consider a day pass if you expect multiple rides.
