Opportunity for UI students at selected partner institutions

The University of Iceland is a member of The University of the Arctic (UArctic) network, and north2north is the network’s dedicated mobility programme. This programme offers students from the University of Iceland the opportunity to apply for an exchange semester at selected partner institutions.

Where can I go?
Students are expected to independently research the institutions most relevant to their fields of study before applying.

Type of mobility
Students at the University of Iceland can only apply for full-semester or full-year exchanges through the north2north programme—not individual courses or short-term mobility.

Additionally, students may apply to other north2north member universities not listed as official partners, but they must do so under separate exchange agreements that UI holds with those institutions.

The north2north exchange spots are quite competitive, with students from all member institutions applying for a limited number of places.

Note: Tuition-free exchange spots through north2north are more competitive than those through other exchange partnerships, such as NMBU. Unlike exchanges limited to institutional partnerships, north2north applicants compete with students from all participating institutions.

To be eligible for the north2north exchange programme, students must:

If there are more applicants than available grants or tuition waivers, selection will be based on the following:

  • Participation in UArctic Programs

Priority is given to students enrolled in UArctic-endorsed programmes or involved in activities related to the UArctic Thematic Networks.

  • Support for Non-Traditional Exchange Participants

Priority may be given to students and institutions that face barriers to international mobility due to lack of resources or geographical isolation. Students from small communities, remote learners, students with families, and those from Indigenous cultures and communities who are traditionally underrepresented may receive additional consideration.

  • Commitment to the Arctic and Northern Regions

Motivation letters will be assessed based on:

  • The student’s study programme
  • Past and future professional/academic goals
  • Personal commitment to contributing to the North (e.g., community engagement, research focus).
