Advocates for UI students

The Student Council represents students, both internally and externally, and is involved in many issues within the University.

The Student Council advocates for all UI students and protects student interests in dealings with the University authorities, the government, and others that influence the UI policies. The role of the Student Council is complex; it serves as a student interest organisation and deals with any issues that affect students.

The Student Council runs the Student Rights Office which handles cases of students who believe they have been unfairly treated within the University community.

The Student Council was established in 1920 and has been fighting ever since to advance student rights and improve the University community.

More on the Student Council

The Student Council publishes the Student Paper, which is published regularly over the winter months. The Student Paper is an ambitious medium for news, entertainment and information. It is distributed to all students at the University of Iceland.

The Student Paper welcomes submissions from all students and encourages them to get involved with student journalism. A new editor and editorial board is hired each year. An online edition is available at Studentabladid.

All students can apply for a Student ID card as soon as they enroll at the University. As well as ID, it is also a discount card, with new and exciting offers being added all the time. The basic card is free of charge but for 1500 ISK you can get a card that allows you to access to buildings outside normal opening hours, if needed.

Showing your student card will get you a discount on hot meals and coffee cards from Háma.

How to apply for a student card
You apply for a student card in Ugla, My Ugla → Student card.

Please note that you do not need to apply for a new student card every year. Instead, you can renew it with a sticker from the Service Desk in the University Centre, or the School of Education's Office of Academic and Student Affairs on the ground floor of Enni in Stakkahlíð.
