How do I get the Parka app?

Download the app from Parka website. Available for iPhone and Android.

Do I need to renew my subscription every month?

No. The subscription renews automatically every month (from the sign-up date).

How do I cancel my subscription?

You can cancel your subscription in the Parka app. When your employment or studies end, your subscription will be automatically removed from Ugla.

Can I register more than one car on my subscription?

Yes, only one license plate can be active at a time. New plates are added in the Parka app, and under the subscription section you select which car should be active at any given time.

Can I park in a short-term space if I have a subscription?

No, short-term spaces (H1) are located at selected sites near university buildings. Everyone who parks in a short-term space (H1) must pay an hourly rate of ISK 230.

Does Keyrt og kvitt (Pay per plate) work at the University of Iceland parking?

Pay per plate does not apply in these parking spaces - you must pay manually at a payment kiosk or through the app. The cameras (LPR) are for surveillance only – no automatic entry or exit registration if you are not a subscriber.

If I have a subscription, do I have a reserved parking space?

No. A subscription does not reserve a specific parking space. It allows you to park in designated subscription areas when spaces are available.

Does the parking fee start as soon as I drive into the area?

No, the parking fee does not begin immediately upon entering the area, and parking is free if you stay for 15 minutes or less.

Do I need to do anything when parking after registering?

No. Once your subscription is active, the system automatically checks you in and out when parking in H2 spaces. Just remember to use the Parka app to pay in other locations where your subscription does not apply.

Can anyone sign up for a subscription plan?

No, the subscription plan is only available to the University of Iceland staff and students. Information is retrieved from Ugla during the application process to verify that the applicant is a student or staff member at the university.

What happens if I don’t pay for parking?

If no payment is made, the vehicle owner will receive a charge in their online bank based on the hourly rate plus a service fee of ISK 1,960. No charges apply if entering and exiting within 15 minutes.

Where are self-service kiosks located?

Self-service kiosks will be located in the following buildings, by the entrance: Main Building, 1st floor Askja, 1st floor Árnagarður, 2nd floor Endurmenntun (Continuing education), 1st floor Gimli and Lögberg, 1st floor, on connecting passage Háskólabíó, 1st floor Nýi Garður, 1st floor, by the elevator Oddi, 1st floor Stapi, 1st floor Tæknigarður, 1st floor University Centre, 2nd floor Veröld – house of Vigdís, 1st floor VR-II, 2nd floor National and University Library

How does the monitoring system work on the university campus?

Cameras read the licence plates of vehicles entering and exiting the parking lots. The monitoring system compares the vehicle’s number plate with individuals authorised to use the parking spaces. When a vehicle leaves the area, a camera reads the number plate and checks it against registered plates and payments. If a driver exits the area without paying, a claim is issued to the vehicle’s owner or operator, or they are notified of unpaid service charges.

Are the details in the system personally identifiable?

No personally identifiable information is stored about vehicles. Vehicle owners are only looked up if the area is exited without payment for the vehicle's stay.

Instructions for subscribing in the Parka app

Open the Parka app. There are two ways to access the subscription registration: Select Reykjavík – Street Parking and swipe left until you find Univesity of Iceland – H2. Select the sidebar icon in the top-right corner, then select the University banner at the bottom of the menu. Tap Manage subscription to start the sign-up process. (If the option is not available please either close and open the app or update the app to the newest version.) The system will ask you to confirm that you are a University of Iceland staff member or student. Tap Go to Ugla and enter your HÍ email address. Check 'Yes' in the tab that asks, "Do you want to allow Parka to get confirmation of your active studies or employment at the University?" You can also enable this setting by logging into Ugla and selecting My Ugla → Settings → Access Settings. Open the Parka app again. You will be asked to re-enter your HÍ email address. A confirmation email will be sent to your HÍ email. Click the link in the email to complete your verification. If approved, you will see the available subscription options (in this case, only one). Select your plan. Enter your payment details and license plate number if you are new to Parka. Once active, the main screen will display a message indicating that license plate recognition is active in these zones. You’re good to go! In these University of Iceland parking areas, the system automatically checks you in and out — you don’t need to do anything else. Just remember to use the Parka app for other parking areas where your subscription doesn’t apply.

Instructions for staff and students at the School of Health Sciences

Staff and students at the School of Health Sciences can subscribe with Parka if they wish to pay a fixed monthly fee of 1,500 ISK to park at University of Iceland buildings, including Læknagarður and Eirberg. Additionally, staff and students from the School of Health Sciences who regularly park in the Hringbraut area must also register their vehicle's license plate number in the database for Green Parking, which manages parking in that area. See additional information here. Please note that this arrangement applies only to staff and students at the School of Health Sciences. Others must pay an hourly fee to park on Landspítali (National University Hospital of Iceland) premises.

The University of Iceland is taking its first step towards improving traffic and the environment on campus by introducing parking fees.

The parking zones will be divided into two categories:

H1: Short-term parking spaces. These are specially marked spaces located closest to the main university buildings. They are subject to a parking fee for all users, in accordance with the published tariff. If you hold a P-card, we kindly ask you to contact us via email (fts@hi.is) to avoid unnecessary complications.
H2: Long-term parking spaces. Staff and students at the University of Iceland may subscribe to use these spaces as long-term parking with a monthly subscription. Other users must pay the hourly rate as specified in the tariff.
1. Each user can register more than one licence plate, but only one plate can be active at a time. New plates are registered in the Parka app and users can choose between cars in the subscription section.
2. No parking fee is applied for the first 15 minutes, then a full fee is charged.
Holders of a disabled parking permit may continue to park in paid spaces without charge, in accordance with current traffic laws. To register a vehicle, please email bilastaedi@hi.is with a picture of your P-card.
The University of Iceland has negotiated special staff rates with Strætó for period cards. Further information in Ugla.
