Collaboration between Nordic and Asian universities

The University of Iceland is a member of two Nordic collaboration networks in Asia: the Nordic Centre at Fudan University in China and the Nordic Centre India. These centres promote Nordic culture, support research and educational opportunities, and strengthen cooperation between Nordic and Asian universities.

Students can take part in summer schools and other academic programmes, while researchers may apply for grants, collaborate on projects, and access workspace at the centres.

The Nordic Centre at Fudan is a network of Nordic and Chinese universities, located at Fudan University campus centrally located in Shanghai. Established in 1995, the centre’s main role is to promote research collaboration and academic exchange between member institutions, as well as to introduce Nordic culture in China.

The University of Iceland currently holds a key position as the host of the Nordic Centre’s secretariat for the period 2024–2027.

Main activities and opportunities include:

  • Summer Course: Business and Innovation in China for Master’s students and final-year undergraduates (Application deadline: March 1 each year)
  • Nordic Studies Programme: Autumn semester course at Fudan University
  • Grants for Academic Events: Joint initiatives between Nordic and Chinese member universities (Application deadlines: March 20 and September 20 annually)
  • Travel Grants: For research stays in Shanghai (Application open year-round)
  • Work and research facilities at the centre
  • Tailor-made courses for member institutions and partners
  • Reception of delegations, guests, and stakeholder networking events

Nordic Centre India (NCI) is a collaborative platform for Nordic and Indian universities, with an office, work facilities, and a guest apartment located in New Delhi. The centre maintains strong ties with renowned Indian universities and serves as a key link between them and the Nordic member institutions.

NCI was established in 2001 with the aim of facilitating cooperation in research and higher education. It offers a wide range of academic and research opportunities.

Main activities and opportunities include:

  • Summer courses: Hosted by Indian universities, with varying topics such as Indian language and culture, gender equality, environmental conservation, and more
  • Guest apartment: Available for scholars from Nordic member institutions
  • Outreach and academic networking: Connecting Nordic and Indian researchers
  • Study tours: Organised for students, academics, and delegations from the Nordic countries
