One semester only Upon arrival students must register at the Service Desk in the University Centre. An Icelandic ID number (i. kennitala) will not be issued for students staying for one semester only. Students must bring their passport or other valid ID and will receive a username and password to the University's intranet 'Ugla'. Health Insurance Students are only insured by providing proof of their own insurance. A European Health Insurance Card from a public health insurance provider is sufficient. Please see the Icelandic Public Health Insurance website for more details. Academic year or longer Before arrival According to law, citizens of EEA/EFTA countries who are studying in Iceland for the academic year or longer must register their legal residence in Iceland. Students can start their application process before they arrive in Iceland by filling out an online application form (A-271). When students arrive, they have to go to the offices of Registers Iceland or the nearest registration office and present their passport and other documents. Required documents before arrival Students must obtain the following documents before arrival: Completed online application Passport or legal travel document Confirmation of school admission (acceptance letter) Registration fees receipt (exchange students are exempt) Documents confirming the ability to provide means of support (see below) Confirmation of medical insurance (EHIC and E-104 or S-41) More information on registering at Registers Iceland Documents regarding means of support Students must provide proof that they can support themselves financially while staying in Iceland. Students must provide confirmation of support for a minimum of three months by submitting a statement of means of support, confirmation of educational grant, and/or a bank statement. Click the link for further information on documents confirming the ability to provide means of support. The minimum financial support for a single person, aged 18 or older, is ISK 239.895 per month. If students receive financial support from their parents, a statement of means of support must be submitted, comprising the following three documents: A document from the parents stating that they are the student's means of support. This document must be in English, signed and dated, and attested by two witnesses. Scanned photocopies of the parents’ IDs, such as passports or driver’s licenses. A bank statement from the parents' bank account indicating their names, the currency, and the amount. The statement must be in English and dated within the last 2 weeks. If students have a scholarship/grant as proof of support they must provide confirmation in English or Icelandic from those who provide the scholarship. The confirmation of the scholarship must include the student's name as well as the date, currency, and total amount of the grant. If students use their own bank statement as proof of support it must be issued within the past 2 weeks and show the student's name, currency, and total amount. The bank statement may be a written statement from the bank. Health insurance Students must bring their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and E-104 or S-41 (whichever applies) with them to Iceland as they must register at the Icelandic Health Insurance during their stay. Students can only submit an application at the Icelandic Health Insurance after they have registered their legal residence in Iceland. Those who fail to register will not have health insurance for six months of residing in Iceland. See further information below under Upon Arrival. Upon Arrival Application and supporting documents Upon arrival students must go to Registers Iceland and the Service Desk with required documents in order to complete their registration. Changes of housing arrangements Registers Iceland must be notified of any changes to students' housing arrangements. Students who have an Icekey (íslykill) or digital certificates must file form A-251 online. Students who are unable to do this online must go to Registers Iceland and file the form in person. Leaving Iceland Before leaving Iceland students must notify Registers Iceland. Students who have an Icekey (i. íslykill) or digital certificates must file form A-251 online. All students who have received income in Iceland, including salaries, grants, or other forms of remuneration, must file a tax return to the Directorate of Internal Revenue (RSK) annually and no later than one week before leaving the country.
