Want to become a mentor?

Students at the University of Iceland can become a mentor (contact person) to our international exchange students. Those who have participated in exchange studies or are considering taking an exchange period abroad should not miss this opportunity. It is also a perfect opportunity for foreign language students to practice their skills and to meet people from different cultures. The project is supervised by the International Division and the Student Council.

Please note that only students currently enrolled at the University of Iceland are eligible to apply to become mentors.

The mentor's role is to assist exchange students once they have arrived in Iceland, discussing practical aspects related to their studies at the University of Iceland, introducing them to social life, and preventing social isolation. Each mentor is assigned 1-5 foreign students.

Mentor-teams
Now friends can apply to work together as mentors, which can be a great choice for both the mentors and the exchange students. Mentors can share the responsibility and organise the work together. Working as a team can make it easier to activate exchange students and it is more fun to be in a larger group.

Mentors receive special recognition for their services in their Diploma Supplement, which contains additional information about their degree. This recognition may be useful when applying for a job or studies abroad. To get the recognition registered in his Diploma Supplement the mentor has to return a final report.

Why become a mentor?

Cultural Enrichment:

  • Mentoring exchange students exposes you to diverse cultures, perspectives, and traditions. This can broaden your understanding of the world and foster a more inclusive worldview.
  • Engaging with students from different backgrounds can also help you appreciate and reflect on your own culture more deeply.

Interpersonal Skills:

  • As a mentor, you develop crucial interpersonal skills such as empathy, active listening, and patience. These skills are valuable in both personal and professional contexts.
  • You'll also enhance your communication abilities, particularly in explaining complex concepts or navigating language barriers.

Networking Opportunities:

  • Building relationships with international students expands your global network, potentially opening doors to future collaborations or friendships across the world.
  • These connections can provide unique insights into different markets and cultures, which can be beneficial in a globalized job market.

Leadership and Management Experience:

  • Mentoring provides hands-on experience in guiding and supporting others, showcasing your ability to take on leadership roles.
  • This experience is often valued by employers and can be highlighted on your resume as evidence of your leadership, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

Resume and Career Boost:

  • Demonstrating a commitment to mentorship and cross-cultural engagement is attractive to many employers, particularly those with international operations or a diverse workforce.
  • Mentoring can also provide you with specific examples of your ability to work in diverse teams, adapt to new challenges, and support others.

Supporting International Students:

  • Incoming exchange students often face significant challenges, including culture shock, language barriers, and homesickness. Your support can make a substantial difference in their adjustment and overall experience.
  • By helping them navigate these challenges, you contribute to creating a welcoming and supportive environment at your institution or in your community.

Promoting Diversity and Inclusion:

  • As a mentor, you play a key role in fostering a more inclusive community by bridging cultural gaps and promoting mutual understanding.
  • Your efforts can help to build a more vibrant, diverse, and globally aware environment, enriching the experiences of everyone involved.

Making a Positive Impact:

  • The satisfaction of knowing you have made a meaningful impact on someone's life is immensely rewarding. Your guidance and support can leave a lasting impression on the exchange students you mentor.
  • Many mentors form lifelong friendships with their mentees, creating bonds that extend beyond the duration of the exchange program.

Learning and Growth for Both Parties:

  • Mentorship is a two-way street. While you provide guidance and support, you'll also learn and grow from the unique perspectives and experiences that your mentees bring.
  • This mutual learning can be deeply fulfilling and can enhance your own educational and personal journey.

Language Skills:

  • If you are interested in learning or improving a foreign language, mentoring exchange students can provide a practical and engaging way to practice.
  • Even if language learning is not your primary goal, the exposure to different languages can enhance your overall communication skills.

Enhanced Academic Experience:

  • Mentoring can complement your academic studies by providing real-world applications of your coursework. For instance, students in fields like international relations, social sciences, or education can directly apply their knowledge through their interactions with exchange students.
  • It can also inspire new academic interests or perspectives that you might not have considered before.
