The University of Iceland's new Research Centre in Breiðdalsvík focuses on the earth sciences and linguistics. The centre's operations are focused on research and dissemination of research results, as well as teaching and supervision of graduate students in earth sciences.
The centre builds on the legacy of the Breiðdalssetur Foundation, which has operated a research and heritage centre in Breiðdalur for years. This is reflected in the centre's strong community outreach mission, with exhibitions in collaboration with the Breiðdalssetur Foundation and collaboration with the elementary school for Breiðdalur and Stöðvarfjörður.
In the autumn of 2020, Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland, and Jón Gunnar Ottósson, Director of the Icelandic Institute of Natural History, signed a co-operation agreement on strengthening research in the field of earth sciences in East Iceland and increasing the institute's share in the research carried out in the area. The University and the Institute jointly fund the position of a project manager at the centre, who curates the Drill Core Library of the Icelandic Institute of Natural History.
