Friday, March 14th, from 12:30 to 1:30 in Askja N-132, Khrystyna Kurta, a Postdoc at the Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Swedish University of Agricultural sciences (SLU) will present her paper:
Genetic Insights into the Reproductive Performance of Swedish Arctic Charr (Salvelinus alpinus)

Male fertility in Swedish Arctic charr exhibits substantial variability, posing a challenge for successful reproduction and breeding programs. Understanding the factors influencing this variability is crucial for improving reproductive outcomes. In this study, we investigated seasonal, age-related, and genetic factors affecting sperm quality in Arctic charr males reared under different photoperiods. Over two consecutive years, the same broodstock males were sampled three times, and their sperm quality was analyzed using a computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) system. To explore the genetic basis of fertility traits, we employed high-throughput sequencing approaches, including ddRAD and whole-genome sequencing, to identify genomic regions associated with sperm quality and its seasonal changes. Finally, we evaluated whether selective breeding could be used to enhance male fertility in farmed populations. By integrating reproductive biology with genomic tools, this research provides insights into optimizing breeding strategies and improving fertility management in Arctic charr.
