The Middle Eastern Studies program at the University of Iceland announces a screening of the documentary 5 Broken Cameras (2011), a collaboration between Palestinian Emad Burnat and Israeli Guy Davidi. Shot over the course of 5 years, Emad Burnat captures the protests in Bil'in of the West Bank first-hand, uniquely structuring the film’s narrative around the sequential destruction of his five cameras.5 Broken Cameras has competed in film festivals internationally, earning many accolades including the World Cinema Directing Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Further bridging to a Western audience, 5 Broken Cameras was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 85th Academy Awards, provoking discussion of the national identity of the film when claimed as a success on behalf of Israel, despite its depiction of the Israeli West Bank barrier and the conflicts that follow. The screening will include an introduction on the production and context of the film.Location and time: Veröld - the house of Vigdis, Monday Nov. 27 at 16.30
