he Teaching Days of the Teaching Academy begin on Friday, March 13th and last for a whole week until Friday, March 20th, where the public universities organize open and in-person events in all departments of the University of Iceland and the other public schools.

Event organized by the Teaching Centre and the Teaching Academy. Åse Nygren: Is there room for different talents? Recognition and reward systems in universities.

Attracting and retaining top talent remains one of the most pressing challenges in higher education today. Traditional academic reward systems, often heavily focused on research output and publications, can limit recognition for diverse contributions such as teaching excellence, societal impact, leadership, open science, and collaboration. In this presentation, Åse Nygren examines key trends and initiatives such as the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA and the Dutch Recognition & Rewards programme, aimed at modernizing recognition and rewards to better value the full spectrum of academic talents. Nygren also discusses productive strategies for institutions to implement these changes, including broader career flexibility, evidence-based merit reviews, and cultural shifts toward inclusive talent development. This talk offers timely insights for academic leaders, HR professionals, faculty developers, and policymakers seeking to build more equitable, motivating, and sustainable academic environments.
