The exhibition Soil Horizon at the Sigurjón Ólafsson Museum is a group exhibition featuring first-year Master’s students in Fine Arts at the Iceland University of the Arts, curated by Master’s students in Exhibition Making, Mediation, and Curatorship at the University of Iceland.
Located at Laugarnestangi, the museum sits in an area with a rich history and cultural heritage shaped over centuries. The title refers to the geological and historical horizons that build up in layers over time. These “marker horizons” are distinct layers characterised by specific physical, chemical, and biological properties. The exhibition reflects the process of transformation within the historical layers of Laugarnes, where different eras stack upon one another.
The artworks mark a new stage in this layered process. The artists respond to their predecessors, leaving their own traces in the memories of the ever-changing soil. The exhibition creates a space for diverse media and approaches, with each artist exploring the site's unique legacy in different ways.
