Dr. Ziwei Lu is a recent PhD graduate from the University of Iceland, specializing in mechanical engineering and finite element analysis (FEA). Originally from Dingyuan, China, she brings three years of industry experience as an R&D engineer at AAC Technologies and test manager at OPPO Communications. After unexpectedly finding her way to Iceland, she applied her expertise to developing sustainable plastic packaging for fresh fish transport. Outside research, she enjoys knitting and exploring Iceland’s landscapes.
In this talk, Ziwei shares her journey to Iceland, her experience adapting to a new academic and cultural environment, and what inspired her to stay. She also explores how advanced mechanical engineering and FEA can help address challenges in Iceland’s seafood industry: improving plastic packaging for fresh fish transport. Her research demonstrates how structural innovations can enable roughly 5% more fish to be transported using 5% less plastic, without compromising packaging strength—reducing freight emissions and export costs.
The talk will be in English and takes place in Veröld – House of Vigdís, room 007, October 12th, 5:30 pm.
Light refreshments will be served before the talk begins – welcome everyone.
The event is part of the lecture series Snacks and Chats about China, organized by the Icelandic-Chinese Cultural Society in cooperation with the Northern Lights Confucius Institute.
