    Queer Effects: an argument for engaged and embodied scholarship Using her own work on gender identity, body image, commercial sex, and drug use, Dr. Chapkis will reflect on her efforts to queer academic borders separating intellectual from embodied, and rigorous from politically engaged. Dr. Wendy Chapkis is a Presidential Scholar and Professor Emeritus of Gender Studies and Sociology at the University of Southern Maine. She is the author of three books: Beauty Secrets: Women and the Politics of Appearance (Cassell); Live Sex Acts: Women Performing Erotic Labor (Routledge); and Dying to Get High: Marijuana as Medicine (New York University Press). She is also the founder of the Querying the Past LGBTQ Oral History Project.
