Hiroshima–Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Photo Poster Exhibition and Survivor Testimony

The University of Iceland is honoured to host the Hiroshima–Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Poster Exhibition from 7 October to 7 November 2026. The exhibition presents photographs documenting the human consequences of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and seeks to promote greater understanding of the realities of nuclear warfare and the importance of peace and nuclear disarmament.

The exhibition itself will be displayed on the lower level of the University Centre (Háskólatorg) and will remain open until 7 November 2026. See opening hours of the building here.

Silja Bára Ómarsdóttir, Rector of the University of Iceland will open the exhibition with representatives of the co-organizers in Japan. The formal opening event will take place on Wednesday, 7 October 2026 from 12:00 to 13:00 in Veröld – House of Vigdís at Heimasvæði Tungumála (2nd-floor library). The event will include testimony from Ms. Teruko Yahata, an atomic bomb survivor who was eight years old at the time of the bombings. The opening event is open to the public.

The University exhibition forms part of the Reykjavík Peace Week in October and is related to a larger Hiroshima–Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Exhibition being held at Reykjavík City Hall from 6 October to 1 November 2026. The City Hall exhibition includes photographs, historical materials and artefacts, personal accounts of survivors, testimony sessions, and virtual reality experiences related to the atomic bombings.
