Veröld - Hús Vigdísar
Auðarsalur
Open Seminar hosted by the Institute of International Affairs at the University of Iceland, Thursday January 8 in Veröld House of Vigdis from 12:15 - 13:15.
In the wake of the United States’ attack on Venezuela and American leaders’ rhetoric about taking over Greenland, tensions in the international system are reaching a peak. Great power politics are becoming entrenched, accompanied by militarization and an arms race, leaving smaller states with little influence.
What does this changing world order mean for small states like Iceland, which depend entirely on respect for international law and state sovereignty? How should Iceland manage relations with its main allies under these circumstances? Is there reason to worry about the foundations on which the country’s defense and security rest?
Panel discussion: Baldur Þórhallsson, Professor of Political Science, University of Iceland, Erlingur Erlingsson, Military Historian, Svanhildur Þorvaldsdóttir, Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Iceland, Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir, Member of Parliament for the Independence Party and former Minister for Foreign Affairs, Þórhildur Sunna Ævarsdóttir, Executive Director of Courage International and former Member of Parliament
Moderator: Pia Hansson, Director of the Institute of International Affairs.
The meeting is held in cooperation with the Faculty of Political Science at the University of Iceland and the Icelandic Political Science Association.
