Subject

Under the United Nations Convention for Biodiversity, countries have recently agreed on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and set an ambitious target of not only protecting 30% of all lands and seas—but also ensuring that all protected areas (PA) are effectively and equitably managed, sustainable, and deliver fair benefits to people. Iceland has a significant and diverse PA estate, and has formally agreed to meet this 30% target and its qualitative goals. This dissertation aims to advance PA management by providing a broad assessment of PA governance, economic impacts, sustainability and their management implications employing Icelandic PAs as case studies.

About the doctoral candidate

Jukka Kalervo Siltanen was born in Finland in 1978. He completed his matriculation exam from the Valkeakoski high school in 1998 and continued to a Master’s program in Computer Science at the University of Tampere, graduating in 2004. He worked at the Tampere University of Applied Science until 2011, when he moved to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to work as a associate expert in a bilateral development program at the Tanzania Commission for Science. After Tanzania, Jukka spent a couple of years teaching scuba diving to share his love for the underwater world, and it made him realize that he wanted to pursue environmental studies further.

He moved to Iceland and joined the University of Iceland Environment and Natural Resources Master's program in 2016 and graduated the following next. His Master’s thesis was a pilot study on the economic impacts of protected areas and after the Master’s program, he worked at the Institute of Economic Studies at the university for a wider economic study concerning protected areas commissioned by the Ministry for the Environment. Before starting the PhD in the ENR program in December 2021, he worked for three years as a research engineer at the Marine Biology Station in Roscoff, France. Currently Jukka works as a park ranger at the Þingvellir National Park, and is involved in teaching and researching protected area management at the University of Iceland.
