Can We Draw Lessons from the Joint Statement?

For decades, differing viewpoints and disagreements about how reading should be taught have negatively affected dialogue and collaboration. As time goes on, however, the number of studies that can inform decision-making continues to grow.

In 2023, a group of American experts with different perspectives collaborated on a joint statement about how reading instruction can best support children who are learning an additional language (cf. ÍSAT in our context). The group relied on peer‑reviewed research and data to reach a consensus that respected and integrated their diverse viewpoints.

Amelia Jara Larimer, a special education teacher and speech-language pathologist from the United States and a PhD student at the School of Education, will discuss this agreement—known as the Joint Statement—and explore whether we in Iceland can learn from its process and conclusions.

    Everyone is welcome!
The seminar will also be held on Zoom.
