Beyond Equality: Who Makes Peace? Women and Youth, Narratives of Equality and the Politics of Peace

Ulla Elizabeth Mulle, Gyða Margrét Pétursdóttir, Flora Tietgen, Þórhildur Davíðsdóttir & María Rut Kristinsdóttir.

As Iceland reflects on its past and present efforts in claiming women's rights, this event asks how commitments to gender equality can be translated into lasting peace. The keynote explores the relationship between gender equality and peace, highlighting a link between meaningful and systemic efforts and peaceful societies — while also acknowledging the growing backlash against gender and human rights. A panel bringing together youth, academic, and political perspectives will examine how peace is shaped through lived experience, public discourse, and political effort, both locally and globally. Together, the discussion invites local and global reflection on who makes peace, whose voices are heard, and how women and youth can continue to shape more just and peaceful futures.

    — Accessibility: Good accessibility. Designated accessible parking, electric opening and elevator. Western entrance advised (closest to largest elevator). Tables and chairs can be moved around, room is flat (no slope). Accessible restrooms on the same floor, as well as gender neutral restrooms.
