The Middle Eastern Studies program & The Palestine Project at the University of Iceland invites the public to a free screening of the documentary Tantura (2022) by Israeli director Alon Schwarz.

This documentary is based on testimonies from Israeli veterans, then in their nineties at the time of filming, Palestinians, as well as on audio testimonies from former soldiers, which Theodore Katz recorded for his thesis in the late 1990s while he was a student at the University of Haifa, to recount the massacre carried out by the Alexandroni Brigade, an elite unit of the newly formed Israeli army, in the Palestinian village of Tantura on May 23, 1948.

The documentary has been recognized internationally, earning nominations at several film festivals, including the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, the Cleveland and Hong Kong International Film Festivals, and the DocAviv Documentary Film Festival. Its release, however, sparked significant controversy, particularly in Israel for challenging the official Israeli narrative regarding the 1948 Palestinian Nakba, drawing both acclaim for its courage and criticism from those disputing its account.

The screening will include an introduction on the production and context of the film.
