International Association of Universities

The University of Iceland is one of almost 600 universities worldwide that are members of the International Association of Universities (IAU).

The IAU serves as the global voice of higher education, strengthening higher education systems worldwide by promoting academic freedom, university autonomy and social responsibility.

The aim of the association is to bring together institutions and organisations to share knowledge, reflect and take action on common concerns. IAU creates a platform for its members to discuss and advance shared priorities in higher education.

The association furthermore emphasises academic freedom, university autonomy, and social responsibility. Its work can be divided into four themes, leadership, internationalization, sustainable development and information technology. IAU publishes a variety of material and maintains an extensive database on universities that is accessible to member institutions.
