    Workshop Overview

    Are you writing code and managing data for your research? Do you spend too much time on tedious manual tasks? Struggling to understand and reuse your own or others’ older code?

    Join CodeRefinery's FREE online workshop series to learn modern tools and best practices for writing research code that lasts and that others can use.

    -> Sep 9-11 (09:00-13:30) and Sep 17, 24, Oct 1, 8, 15, 22 (10:00-12:30), 2025 (Iceland time).

    This hands-on workshop introduces tools and techniques to help you write more FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) research code. 

    Workshop Schedule:

    • Sep 9-10   Introduction to version control with Git
    • Sep 11      Collaborative distributed version control
    • Sep 17      Reproducible research: Preparing code to be usable by you and others in the future
    • Sep 24     Social coding and open software: What can you do to get credit for your code and to allow reuse
    • Oct 1        How to document your research software
    • Oct 8        Jupyter notebooks: A tool to write and share executable notebooks and data visualization
    • Oct 15      Automated testing: Preventing yourself and others from breaking your functioning code
    • Oct 22     Modular code development: Making reusing parts of your code easier

    Who is it for?

    • Students at levels - Bachelors, Master’s, or PhD.
    • Researchers across disciplines and career stages.
    • Research software engineers and developers working with scientific code.
    • Administrative and technical staff supporting research or development work
    • Anyone curious about version control, reproducibility, and collaborative coding practices.

    Practicalities

    • The workshop is FREE and open to everyone.
    • You can participate online on your own OR during the first week, join us at the Computer Science department in Groska, Reykjavik, for an in-person exercise session with helpers.
    • Registered participants from Iceland will receive an invitation to the in-person session closer to the workshop date. 
    • All sessions will be conducted in English.
