Vision

The University of Iceland (UI) views artificial intelligence (AI) as a fundamental technology that will revolutionise learning, teaching, research and work. The University aims to be a pioneer in the responsible use of AI in Iceland. The overall goal is for students and staff to become responsible users of the technology, but also to be familiar with its limitations and able to think critically about its use. This will ensure that they are ready to meet future challenges.

There are three main pillars to this policy:

Aims: Students and staff will have excellent knowledge of AI and the skills required to use it in a responsible, critical and creative way in their work and studies.

Actions:

  • UI will provide systematic and accessible education, guidance and training in AI for the entire University community.
  • Emphasis will be placed on developing AI literacy, which means being conscious of ethical considerations, understanding the limitations of the technology and being able to assess the reliability of information.
  • Teaching staff will be supported to integrate AI into their teaching and redesign courses and assessment methods to reflect the evolving technology.

Aims: AI will be used to increase efficiency in administration, research and teaching and to create scope for innovation.

Actions:

  • AI will be used to simplify administrative procedures and make them more efficient, to improve services and reduce repetitive work.
  • Researchers will be encouraged to use AI to enhance analytical capacity and create new research pathways.
  • Employees will be encouraged to develop and share methods for harnessing AI to support teaching and planning.

Aims: Students and staff will have equal opportunities to access the AI technology and support offered by the University.

Actions:

  • UI will work to ensure that essential AI software and infrastructure are equally accessible to all.
  • Clear, fair and standardised rules for the use of AI will be established to ensure equality between students when it comes to assessment.
  • Awareness of accessibility and equality challenges, such as bias in modelling, will be incorporated into all training and implementation plans.
Guiding principles for implementation

To ensure successful implementation of this policy, the University will follow these guiding principles:

  • Academic integrity: Students and staff are responsible for all material that they present under their own names and must respect rules and standards for ethics and good scientific practice. If students break the rules that instructors set for the use of AI for assignments, essays or exams, they may be subject to sanctions as appropriate, in accordance with Article 19 of the Act on Public Higher Education Institutions. Students must always disclose the use of AI in accordance with the rules have been set.
  • Standardised guidelines: The University will develop a clear, standardised template for guidelines on the use of AI in courses and administration in order to prevent inconsistencies and uncertainty among students and staff.
  • Information security, human rights and data protection: All use, development and implementation of AI systems will comply with existing data protection law. Clear rules will be set for third parties handling University data and staff will be provided with clear data protection guidelines.
  • Integration and cooperation: Implementation and use of AI will be integrated into the activities of existing core units (e.g. Division of Academic Affairs, Division of Information Technology and Division of Science and Innovation) to ensure professional accountability and institution-wide cooperation.
Review and future vision

AI technology is developing at unprecedented speed and new tools, opportunities and challenges continue to emerge. This policy is therefore a living document, not a final destination.

To ensure that UI continues to take a leading role, it is essential to stay up to date and take a critical approach to technological advances. This policy and the accompanying action plan must be regularly reviewed and adapted. The University will need to evaluate the success of any action taken and learn from experience to ensure that this policy continues to serve its aims and deliver skills, efficiency and equality in the future.
