Security cameras are an important part of the security system at the University of Iceland. Experience shows that security cameras are a significant deterrent and can be invaluable when reporting theft and vandalism. They help protect the University's property, employees, and students and improve general security on campus.
Surveillance is therefore based on the legitimate interests of the University of Iceland concerning property protection and campus security.
Regulation no. 50/2023 on electronic surveillance regulates the use of security cameras. No data is collected about individuals and no data is stored for longer than thirty days unless there is a special reason for doing so.
On the Data Protection Authority's website, you can find answers to frequently asked questions about security cameras and the rules that apply to them - Icelandic only.
There are security cameras at the entrances of all University buildings and in many outside areas. The map below shows the areas on campus where people can expect to be in the field of view of security cameras.
More information about the rights of individuals concerning security cameras can be obtained from the head of property management, Björn Auðunn Magnússon, email: bam@hi.is, and the data protection officer, Magnús Jökull Sigurjónsson, email: mjs@hi.is.
