Acknowledgements awarded to University of Iceland staff for commendable achievements in their work. Rules on awarding acknowledgement to University of Iceland staff for commendable achievements in their work were approved by the University Council 19 September 2002. At the beginning of each academic year, the University of Iceland awards three members of staff with acknowledgements for commendable achievements in their work. The premise for the acknowledgement is excellence in teaching, research, management or other work for the benefit of the university. Selection committee The University Council appoints two members of a selection committee; one shall be a former tenured lecturer at the university, the other a former student. These two representatives shall annually, along with the Rector, select from those nominated, and decide who shall receive the acknowledgement. The selection committee shall be appointed for three years at a time; the Rector shall be its chairperson. The committee shall provide a report to accompany the acknowledgement. Nominations The University of Iceland Teaching Committee nominates three individuals who the committee believes should be rewarded for excellence or particular novelty in teaching. The University of Iceland Science Committee nominates three individuals that have achieved excellent results in research. The University Council appoints a three-strong committee to nominate three individuals that have achieved excellent results in areas other than teaching and research. The members of the committee shall be the vice-chairman of the University Council, a University Council representative of the general public, and a University Council representative of academic schools. All nominations shall be accompanied by arguments in writing, taking into account the general premise for acknowledgements. Nominations shall be handed in to the selection committee (at the office of the Rector), no later than 1st September each year and the selection committee's work shall be completed no later than 1st October of the same year. The results are announced at the graduation ceremony on the first day of winter, in October of the same year, at which occasion the Rector presents the acknowledgement. Manner of acknowledgement The presentation of the acknowledgement consists of a confirmation document, along with the selection committee findings and a monetary prize.
