Resident Permit Renewal

The residence permit in Iceland is usually valid for one year and needs to be renewed every year.

Applies to non-EU/EEA citizens only

Submission of documents to the Directorate of Immigration for renewal needs to take place at least 4 weeks before the permits expiration date. If the rules given by the Directorate of Immigration is followed the applicant is still legal in the country even though the process may be delayed and go beyond the period of validity of the permit.  If a renewal of the residence permit is not applied within the time frame given by the Directorate of Immigration, the application may be processed as if it were a first permit application, not a renewal.

When applying for a renewal of a residence permit, the applicant must appear in person at the Directorate of Immigration. The applicant will be photographed and must submit a sample of his/her signature. The applicant should also bring his/her passport.
