Regulation on admission requirements for undergraduate study at the University of Iceland, no. 319/2009

with subsequent amendments

CHAPTER I

Article 1. In General.

Students commencing undergraduate studies for their first degree from the University of Iceland shall have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination or an equivalent qualification from a foreign school. Faculties may set additional admission requirements, as outlined in further detail in Articles 3 - 23 of this Regulation.

Those who have completed one year of study (60 credits) from a recognised university or college at university level can be considered to have met the general admission requirements for undergraduate study, in accordance with paragraph 1, regardless of whether they have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination or an equivalent qualification from a foreign school. Further details on the admission of such individuals can be found in Articles 3 - 23 of this Regulation.

Exemptions from the requirement of an Icelandic matriculation examination may be granted in accordance with the provisions of the University central regulation, further determined by the University Council.

Regulations specific to each faculty apply to admission requirements for postgraduate study; these are established by the University Council and published in the course catalogue and on the faculty websites.

Article 2. Information on admission requirements.

Information on admission requirements for each faculty shall be presented in the course catalogue, on the University website and in introductory material for new students. It must be clearly stated that admission requirements can differ between faculties and programmes; therefore, registration in one faculty or programme does not automatically bestow the right to register in another.

Instructions shall furthermore be provided on further preparation recommended for specific programmes, with reference to number of credits in certain subjects at the upper-secondary school level, or other considerations.

CHAPTER II. Admission requirements for faculties in the School of Social Sciences.

Article 3. [Faculty of Sociology, Anthropology and Folkloristics.]¹

[To enrol at the Faculty of Sociology, Anthropology and Folkloristics a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination or an equivalent qualification. A qualification from the Department of Preliminary University Studies at Keilir or a Preliminary Studies diploma from Reykjavik University (formerly the Technical University of Iceland and the Icelandic Technical College) is considered equivalent to an Icelandic matriculation examination and satisfies the admission requirements for BA programmes within the Faculty. Recommended preparation depends on the objectives of the selected programme. Further information may be found in the course catalogue and introductory material for new students.]¹

Article 4. Faculty of Social Work.

To enrol at the Faculty of Social Work a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination or an equivalent qualification from a foreign school. [A Preliminary Studies diploma from]¹ Reykjavik University (formerly the Technical University of Iceland and the Icelandic Technical College) is considered equivalent to an Icelandic matriculation examination and satisfies the admission requirements for BA programmes within the Faculty. A qualification from the Department of Preliminary Studies at Keilir satisfies the admission requirements for the Faculty of Social Work, on the condition that the applicant has completed studies intended for those planning further studies in the humanities or social sciences. Recommended preparation depends on the objectives of the selected programme. Further information may be found in the course catalogue and introductory material for new students.

Article 5. Faculty of Economics.

To commence a BS or BA programme at the Faculty of Economics a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination from an academic programme or an equivalent qualification as judged by the Faculty. [A Preliminary Studies diploma from]² Reykjavik University (formerly the Technical University of Iceland and the Icelandic Technical College), or an Icelandic matriculation examination from a business programme with extracurricular study in accordance with the national curriculum guide for upper-secondary schools, is considered equivalent to an Icelandic matriculation examination from an academic programme and satisfies the admission requirements for BS and BA programmes within the Faculty. A qualification from the Department of Preliminary Studies at Keilir satisfies the admission requirements for the Faculty of Economics, on the condition that the applicant has completed studies intended for those planning further studies in [economics.]² [...]²

Article 6. Faculty of Law.

[To enrol at the Faculty of Law a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination or an equivalent qualification from a foreign school. [A Preliminary Studies diploma from Reykjavik University (formerly the Technical University of Iceland and the Icelandic Technical College) is considered equivalent to an Icelandic matriculation examination and satisfies the admission requirements for BA studies within the Faculty.]³ Furthermore. a qualification from the Department of Preliminary University Studies at Keilir satisfies the admission requirements for the Faculty of Law. It is recommended that applicants have an Icelandic matriculation examination from an academic programme or equivalent, with emphasis on proficiency in the Icelandic language.]¹

Article 7. Faculty of Political Science.

Article 8. Faculty of Business Administration.

[To commence a BS programme at the School of Business a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination or an equivalent qualification as judged by the Faculty.]¹ [A Preliminary Studies diploma from]² Reykjavik University (formerly the Technical University of Iceland and the Icelandic Technical College), or an Icelandic matriculation examination from a business administration programme with extracurricular study in accordance with the national curriculum guide for upper-secondary schools, is considered equivalent to an Icelandic matriculation examination and satisfies the admission requirements for BS programmes within the Faculty. A qualification from the Department of Preliminary Studies at Keilir satisfies the admission requirements for the School of Business, on the condition that the applicant has completed studies intended for those planning further studies in business administration. It is recommended that applicants have completed at least 15 credits in English and at least 12 credits in mathematics.

CHAPTER III. Admission requirements for faculties in the School of Health Sciences.

Article 9. Faculty of Nursing.

[To enrol at the Faculty of Nursing a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination or an equivalent qualification from a foreign school. A qualification in [engineering and physical sciences from the Department of Preliminary University Studies at Keilir (formerly Department of Preliminary Studies)]² satisfies the admission requirements for the Faculty of Nursing. [Applicants who have completed preliminary studies for admittance to other universities can apply for exemption from these admission requirements. If an exemption is granted, the applicant shall be considered equal to those who meet the formal requirements that pertain to the selection of applicants for admission to the Faculty of Nursing, cf. Regulation no. 24/2015.]² Recommended preparation in accordance with the 2011 national curriculum guide for upper-secondary schools is: Qualification level 3 in Icelandic, English and mathematics. In addition, it is recommended that the student has completed 10 uscr at level 3 in chemistry and/or mathematics and 5 uscr at level 3 in biology.]¹

[A student who has completed studies in Nursing from a university abroad, and obtained authorisation as a registered nurse in their native country, may apply for exemption from sitting [competitive examinations]⁴ for admission to the Faculty of Nursing. The head of the Division of Academic Affairs decides whether an exemption request shall be granted, having received the opinion of the Faculty, cf. also the provisions of Article 47 of the Regulation for the University of Iceland no. 569/2009, on admission of students. When evaluating an application for exemption, the applicant's previous studies shall be taken into account, along with a statement from the Directorate of Health on the applicant's eligibility to obtain an Icelandic licence as a registered nurse, i.e. which courses or clinical training the applicant may need to be granted such a licence.]³

[To enrol in the BS in Nursing for Non-Nursing Graduates the applicant must have completed a Bachelor's degree with a minimum grade of 6.5, and should have obtained the equivalent of 8 credits in methodology/statistics, 6 credits in sociology or psychology subjects and 26 credits in biology subjects, as further determined by the Faculty.]⁴

Article 10. Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

To enrol at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination from an academic programme or an equivalent qualification from a foreign school. It is recommended that applicants have an Icelandic matriculation examination from a natural sciences programme with an emphasis on chemistry. [A qualification in engineering and physical sciences from the Department of Preliminary Studies at Keilir satisfies the admission requirements for the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.]¹

Article 11. Faculty of Medicine.

[To enrol at the Faculty of Medicine a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination or an equivalent qualification from a foreign school. Students who have completed an engineering and technology Preliminary Studies diploma from Reykjavik University (formerly the Technical University of Iceland and the Icelandic Technical College) or a qualification in engineering and physical sciences from the Department of Preliminary University Studies at Keilir, are considered to have fulfilled the admission requirements of the Faculty.]¹

Students are admitted to study medicine or physical therapy on the basis of an entrance examination in accordance with relevant further regulations. The entrance examination is based in part on upper-secondary school course material but also tests general knowledge, ethics and logical thinking.

Article 12. Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition.

[To enrol for studies in food science or nutrition at the Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination or an equivalent qualification. It is recommended that applicants have an Icelandic matriculation examination from a natural sciences programme. Students who have obtained [a Preliminary Studies diploma from]² Reykjavik University (formerly the Technical University of Iceland and the Icelandic Technical College) are considered to have met the admission requirements of the Faculty. A qualification in engineering and physical sciences from the Department of Preliminary Studies at Keilir is considered equivalent to an Icelandic matriculation examination.

Article 13. Faculty of Psychology.

To enrol at the Faculty of Psychology a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination or an equivalent qualification. It is recommended that applicants have an Icelandic matriculation examination from an academic programme. [A qualification from the Department of Preliminary Studies at Keilir is considered equivalent to an Icelandic matriculation examination.]¹

Article 14. Faculty of Odontology.

An Icelandic matriculation examination from an academic programme or an equivalent qualification from a foreign school is required for admission to odontology or the BS in Dental Technology. Students who have obtained a qualification in engineering and physical sciences from the Department of Preliminary Studies at Keilir are considered to have met the admission requirements of the Faculty. It is recommended that applicants have a good knowledge of biology, physics and chemistry.

CHAPTER IV. Admission requirements for faculties in the School of Humanities.

Article 15. [Faculty of Languages and Cultures.]²

[To enrol at the [Faculty of Languages and Cultures]² a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination from an Icelandic upper-secondary school or an equivalent qualification from a foreign school. A qualification from the Department of Preliminary Studies at Keilir satisfies the admission requirements for the [Faculty of Languages and Cultures,]² on the condition that the applicant has completed studies intended for those planning further studies in the humanities or social sciences. Article 16. Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies.

[To enrol at the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination or an equivalent qualification from a foreign school. A qualification from the Department of Preliminary Studies at Keilir satisfies the admission requirements for the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies on the condition that the applicant has completed studies intended for those planning further studies in the humanities or social sciences. It is recommended that applicants have an Icelandic matriculation examination from an academic programme, with emphasis on Icelandic, Danish, English, history and the social sciences.]¹

Article 17. Faculty of Icelandic and Comparative Cultural Studies.

[To enrol at the Faculty of Icelandic and Comparative Cultural Studies a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination from an Icelandic upper-secondary school or an equivalent qualification from a foreign school. A qualification from the Department of Preliminary Studies at Keilir satisfies the admission requirements for the Faculty of Icelandic and Comparative Cultural Studies on the condition that the applicant has completed studies intended for those planning further studies in the humanities or social sciences.

To commence the BA in Icelandic as a Second Language a student must furthermore obtain a minimum grade on an assessment examination held at the beginning of each academic year. Recommended preparation depends on the objectives of the selected programme. Further information may be found in the course catalogue and introductory material for new students.]¹

Article 18. Faculty of History and Philosophy.

CHAPTER V. Admission requirements for faculties in the School of Education.

Article 19. [Faculty of Subject Teacher Education.

To commence a B.Ed. programme at the Faculty of Subject Teacher Education a student shall have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination from an Icelandic upper secondary school or an equivalent qualification from a foreign school. A qualification from the Department of Preliminary Studies at Keilir or [a Preliminary Studies diploma from]² Reykjavik University (formerly the Technical University of Iceland and the Icelandic Technical College) is considered equivalent to an Icelandic matriculation examination and satisfies the admission requirements for a B.Ed. programme within the Faculty. Recommended preparation depends on the objectives of the selected programme. Further information may be found in the course catalogue and introductory information for new students.

To commence the Diploma in Teaching Studies for Certified Master Tradesmen at the bachelor level in the Faculty of Subject Teacher Education a student must have obtained a fully valid qualification in a trade (letter of master's certification), art, technology or vocational subject which may be taught at the primary or secondary school level in a specific subject or field.

To commence the B.Ed. programme in Vocational Education and Training (VET) Pedagogy in the Faculty of Subject Teacher Education a student must have obtained a fully valid qualification in a trade (a master tradesman license), art, technology or vocational subject which may be taught at the primary or secondary school level in a specific subject or field. A student must also have obtained either (a) an Icelandic matriculation examination, or (b) the Diploma in Teaching Studies for Certified Master Tradesmen at the bachelor level from the Faculty of Teacher Education (from 1 July 2018 named the Faculty of Subject Teacher Education) and five years' employment experience in the subject.]¹

Article 20. [Faculty of Health Promotion, Sports and Leisure Studies.

To commence a BA, B.Ed. or BS programme a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination from an Icelandic upper secondary school or an equivalent qualification from a foreign school. A qualification from the Department of Preliminary Studies at Keilir or [a Preliminary Studies diploma from]² Reykjavik University (formerly the Technical University of Iceland and the Icelandic Technical College) is considered equivalent to an Icelandic matriculation examination and satisfies the admission requirements for BA, B.Ed. and BS programmes within the Faculty. Recommended preparation depends on the objectives of the selected programme. Additionally, those who plan to pursue the BS in Sport and Health Sciences must reach the set standard for grade 10 in swimming in accordance with the national curriculum guide for compulsory schools.

Those applicants who have completed a qualification from the Physical Training Instructor School of Iceland may obtain the BS in Sport and Health Sciences by completing 60 specific additional credits (see the course catalogue).

Article 21. [Faculty of Education and Pedagogy.

[Article 21. a. Faculty of Education and Diversity.

To commence a BA programme a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination from an Icelandic secondary school or an equivalent qualification from a foreign school. A qualification from the Department of Preliminary Studies at Keilir or [a Preliminary Studies diploma from]² Reykjavik University (formerly the Technical University of Iceland and the Icelandic Technical College) is considered equivalent to an Icelandic matriculation examination and satisfies the admission requirements for a BA programme within the Faculty. Applicants who have completed a qualification from the Developmental Therapist School of Iceland may obtain the BA in Social Education by completing 30 specific additional credits (see the course catalogue).]¹

CHAPTER VI. Admission requirements for faculties in the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences.

[Article 22. General provisions.]¹

[To enrol at faculties of the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences an applicant shall have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination, cf. Article 1, or an equivalent qualification. A qualification from the Department of Preliminary University Studies at Keilir or a Preliminary Studies diploma from Reykjavik University is considered equivalent to an Icelandic matriculation examination.

Applicants who have graduated with a BS/BA degree or an equivalent degree in any subject from a recognised university meet the requirements for enrolling in undergraduate programmes in faculties of the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences. It should be noted that undergraduate programmes at the School are mostly taught in Icelandic.

Further specifications for individual faculties of the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences are detailed in Articles 23–28.]²

[Article 23. Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science.]¹

[To enrol at the Faculty a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination or an equivalent qualification. A level four qualification from the engine practice programme at the Technical College Reykjavik (formerly the Engineering College of Iceland), [an engineering and technology or computer studies Preliminary Studies diploma]³ from Reykjavik University or a qualification in engineering and physical sciences from the Department of Preliminary University Studies at Keilir is considered equivalent to an Icelandic matriculation examination. Applicants holding qualifications from a foreign school or university are reminded that they are also required to understand written and spoken Icelandic.

Recommended preparation for a programme in engineering: It is strongly recommended that the applicant has completed at least 40 credits in mathematics and 50 credits in the natural sciences (at least 10 of which are in physics).

Recommended preparation for a programme in computer science: It is strongly recommended that the applicant has completed at least 35 credits in mathematics.]²

[Article 24. Faculty of Earth Sciences.

[To enrol at the Faculty a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination or an equivalent qualification. [An engineering and technology Preliminary Studies diploma]³ from Reykjavik University or a qualification in engineering and physical sciences from the Department of Preliminary University Studies at Keilir is considered equivalent to an Icelandic matriculation examination. Applicants holding qualifications from a foreign school or university are reminded that they are also required to understand written and spoken Icelandic.

Required preparation for the BS in geology: 35 credits in mathematics and 50 credits in the natural sciences, at least 10 of which are in physics, 10 in chemistry and 10 in geology.

Required preparation for the BS in geophysics: 35 credits in mathematics and 50 credits in the natural sciences, at least 10 of which are in physics, 10 in chemistry and 10 in geology.

Recommended preparation for the BS in geophysics: It is strongly recommended that the applicant has completed 40 credits in mathematics.

Exemptions from the required number of credits may be granted if deemed reasonable.]²

Article 25. Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences.

[To enrol at the Faculty a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination or an equivalent qualification. [A Preliminary Studies diploma]³ from Reykjavik University or a qualification from the Department of Preliminary University Studies at Keilir is considered equivalent to an Icelandic matriculation examination. Applicants holding qualifications from a foreign school or university are reminded that they are also required to understand written and spoken Icelandic.

Recommended preparation for a programme in biology: 35 credits in mathematics and 50 credits in the natural sciences, at least 10 of which are in physics, 10 in chemistry and 10 in biology. A qualification from the Department of Preliminary University Studies at Keilir is only valid if it is in engineering and physical sciences, [while a Preliminary Studies diploma from Reykjavik University must be in engineering and technolgy]³.]²

Article 26. Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

[To enrol at the Faculty a student must have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination or an equivalent qualification. A level four qualification from the engine practice programme at the Technical College Reykjavik (formerly the Engineering College of Iceland), [an engineering and technology or computer studies Preliminary Studies diploma]⁴ from Reykjavik University or a qualification in engineering and physical sciences from the Department of Preliminary University Studies at Keilir is considered equivalent to an Icelandic matriculation examination. Applicants holding qualifications from a foreign school or university are reminded that they are also required to understand written and spoken Icelandic.

[Applicants for a programme in engineering technology that have completed studies in upper secondary school may be granted an exemption from the aforesaid requirements, given that they complete a placement examination. When assessing an exemption, employment experience is also taken into consideration. In all cases, exemptions must be in accordance with the stipulations of the Regulation for the University of Iceland no. 569/2009 and any further decisions of the University Council.

Applicants fulfilling the requirements for an exemption must:

Sit preparatory courses in mathematics in the Autumn semester of their first year of study.
Complete the preparatory courses in order to be entitled to continue their studies in the Spring semester of the first year.]³

Article 27. Faculty of Physical Sciences.

[To enrol at the Faculty an applicant shall have obtained an Icelandic matriculation examination or an equivalent qualification consisting of at least 35 credits in mathematics and 50 credits in the natural sciences, at least 10 of which are in physics, 10 in chemistry and 10 in biology. Exemptions from the required number of credits may be granted if deemed reasonable.

[An engineering and technology Preliminary Studies diploma]³ from Reykjavik University or a qualification in engineering and physical sciences from the Department of Preliminary University Studies at Keilir is considered equivalent to an Icelandic matriculation examination. Applicants holding qualifications from a foreign school or university are reminded that they are also required to understand written and spoken Icelandic.

It is strongly recommended that applicants for the BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, jointly run by the Faculty of Physical Sciences and the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences, have completed 35 credits in mathematics and 50 credits in the natural sciences, at least 10 of which are in physics, 10 in chemistry and 10 in biology.

For programmes in physics and mathematics it is strongly recommended that the applicant has completed at least 40 credits in mathematics.]²

CHAPTER VII. Establishment and entry into force.

[Article 29.]¹ Entry into force

The University Council has established this Regulation based on the recommendations of the relevant schools and with reference to paragraph 3, Article 18 of the Act on Public Higher Education Institutions no. 85/2008.

The Regulation enters into force immediately and will apply to the admission of students as of the academic year 2009 – 2010. At the same time Regulation no. 573/2005 on admission requirements for the University of Iceland with subsequent amendments is repealed.
