The application period starts around mid December for the school year 2026-2027.

The University must have received the applicant's certified academic transcripts and previous degree diplomas no later than 8 February.

Deadline for exchange students, and Icelandic and Nordic citizens

Exchange student applications for the autumn semester or full academic year must be submitted by:

  • 1 April for non-EU/EEA students
  • 1 May for EU/EEA students

 

Exchange student applications for the spring semester must be submitted by:

  • 1 September for non-EU/EEA students
  • 1 October for EU/EEA students

The application deadline for all programmes in: 

  • Icelandic as a second Language and
  • Academic Icelandic practical diploma

is 20 May for applicants who are residents of Iceland and have an Icelandic ID number.

International applicants who have lived in Iceland or are living in Iceland will have to provide a Certificate of legal registration history – without addresses, countries specified.

Electronic applications for undergraduate studies are accepted twice a year. 

The application period for undergraduate studies for the autumn semester and full academic year starts on the University Open Day (Háskóladagurinn) at the end of February or the beginning of March each year. The application deadline is 5 June.

The application period for undergraduate studies starting in the spring semester begins on September 15. The application deadline is 30 November.

Note! The application deadline for all programmes in Icelandic as a second Language and Academic Icelandic practical diploma is 20 May for applicants who are residents of Iceland and have an Icelandic ID number.

The application period for graduate studies for the autumn semester and full academic year starts on the University Open Day (Háskóladagurinn) at the end of February or the beginning of March each year. The application deadline is 15 April. 

The application period for graduate studies starting in the spring semester begins September 15. The application deadline is 30 November. 

Exemptions to the application deadline

You can apply for a diploma programme or a micro-credential programme at the Masters's level until June 5 in the following schools/faculties/subjects:

  • School of Social Sciences 
  • School of Education 
  • Faculty of Philosophy, History and Archaeology
  • Faculty of Icelandic and Comparative Cultural Studies
  • Public Health Sciences
  • Environment and Natural Resources

 

Application for doctoral programme at the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences and Health Sciences are open all year. 
Students registered on interdisciplinary programme graduate from the faculty of their thesis supervisor. The application period depends on the school and the faculty the supervisor belong to.
