Speaker: Dr. Yrsa Bergmann Sverrisdóttir, Professor of Physiology, Department of Physiology, Faculty of Nursing, School of Health Science, University of Iceland

Title: Microneurography as a tool in clinical neurophysiology – studying Sympathetic nerve traffic in humans

Bio: Professor Sverrisdottir is a trained Sympathetic Microneurographer, gaining her PhD in Autonomic Neurophysiology at the Institute of Neuroscience, Department of Clinical Neurophysiology, Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, under the supervision of Professors Mikael Elam and Gunnar B Wallin, the pioneer in sympathetic research in humans.

Professor Sverrisdottir has been in the field of Physiology and Autonomic Neurophysiology for over 25 years and has held positions in some of the leading autonomic neuroscience labs around the world. She is also the Senior Associate Editor of Frontiers in Autonomic Neuroscience, on the Review Editorial Board of Frontiers in Integrative Physiology, a Peer reviewer for the Medical Research Council, United Kingdom and a Topic Editor, Frontiers in Autonomic Neuroscience, as well as a Journal Peer Reviewer for a number of peer review journals such as; Circulation, Hypertension, Clinical Endocrinology, Clinical Autonomic Research, JCEM and AJP to name a few.

She has successfully established the microneurography nerve recording technique for her research in Australia (Sydney), Brazil (Curitiba), Portugal (Lisbon), The United Kingdom (Oxford, Brighton, Cardiff, Glasgow), Denmark (Copenhagen) and The United Arab Emirates (Dubai).

Her passion for exploring the autonomic nervous system and establishing international collaborations has been the inspiraton to design, conduct and oversee multiple government-funded research projects, the results of which have contributed to the field of autonomic neuroscience.

In this talk Professor Sverrisdottir will give insight into the Microneurographic technique as well as some of the unique findings it has revealed about Human Sympathetic nerve traffic in health and disease.
