Sustainable Arctic discussed during the University's Green Days

Building a Sustainable Arctic is the main theme of Green Days at the University of Iceland; 18 - 22 March. Green Days are organized by GAIA; the student organization for master’s students in the Environment and Natural Resources programme at the University of Iceland.

Green days are organized annually in collaboration with numerous parties working on environmental and sustainable issues. The programme is diverse and centred around the theme “Building a Sustainable Arctic” as Iceland prepares for its upcoming chairmanship of the Arctic Council.

The first event of Green days is a symposium in the Nordic House discussing international collaboration on sustainability in the Arctic on Monday, 18 March between 1 - 3 p.m. Representatives from Five Embassies of Arctic nations and the Icelandic Foreign Ministry will be talking about their work in sustainability in the Arctic context as well as their hopes for collaboration on this matter. A panel discussion with Q and A will follow their talks.

Moderator: Pia Hanson, Director of the Institute of International Affairs and the Centre for Arctic Studies.

Diverse events are on the agenda all focusing on environmental issues; both from a global and a personal perspective. The events include discussions on the value of whales in the Arctic, corporate social responsibility in the energy race in the Arctic, urban clean-up in Öskjuhlíð, films and PubQuiz in the Student Cellar.
