Grants for research in education and pedagogy

The Steingrímur Arason Fund calls for grant proposals. The aim of the Fund is to advance specialist knowledge in education and pedagogy.

Grants will be awarded to research specialists and postgraduate students studying the educational sciences.

The application deadline is 12 April 2021.

Particular priority will be given to:
a. research involving innovative knowledge in the field
b. development projects that connect theory and practice in the field
c. exchange studies abroad in education and pedagogy

The total budget for grants allocated in 2021 is up to ISK 1,000,000.

Grant proposals must include the following:

• Applicant's name, national ID number, address, telephone number and valid email address.
• Most relevant points from the applicant's educational background and CV.
• Title of the project, aims and scientific value.
• Concise description of the project, max. 150 words, which will be used in general promotion and publicity if the proposal is accepted.
• A more detailed description of the project, max. one page, discussing the aims of the project, implementation and outputs, as well as how it supports the aims of the Fund.
• Work timeline and budget.

If the proposal is for a research project, it must include a description of the main elements of the research.

• Collaborating partners if applicable.
• How the money will be used if the proposal is accepted.
• Information about other financial support.
• Names, telephone numbers and email addresses of possible references.

The maximum length of the proposal is three pages, not including supporting documentation. All proposals will be treated as confidential. The board of the Fund reserves the right to award grants to more than one applicant, to reject all applicants and/or allocate grants in another way.

Emphasis is placed on the quality of academic work in the proposal.

The grant recipient must submit a report to the Fund on the main findings and outcomes of the project after it ends.

Grants will be allocated in May at a formal ceremony.

About the Fund

The Steingrímur Arason was formerly known as the Columbia Fund and was founded with a donation from Steingrímur Arason in 1939. Steingrímur (1879-1951) completed his teaching degree from Flensborgarskóli in 1908. He studied human development and pedagogy at the Teachers College at Columbia University in the United States from 1915-1920, the first Icelander to do so. He taught children and teenagers in Eyjafjörður and Reykjavík, but his main work was at the Teachers College in Reykjavík where he taught for 20 years.
