Digital University Day tomorrow

25/02/2022 - 12:37

Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland, sent the following message to University staff and students today (25 February 2022):

"Dear students and colleagues,

The sun is rising ever higher here in Iceland, but sadly these are dark days in global politics. Governments across the world are responding to the horrifying situation in Eastern Europe and UI scholars have done their best to shed light on the shocking developments of the past few days. My thoughts are with all those affected by the conflict and especially our staff and students who have family and friends in Ukraine. We must stand united and look out for one another.

Abstract

No changes to COVID restrictions at the University

14/01/2022 - 13:43

Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland, sent the following message to University staff and students today (14 January 2022):

"Dear students and colleagues,

Despite the difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the new year is off to a good start at the University of Iceland. The government recently announced that a 10-person limit on gatherings will enter into effect at midnight and remain in place until 2 February. However, the restrictions on the education system will remain the same, meaning that there are no further changes to our work at UI.

Many new students began programmes at UI in early January, some on campus and some remotely. I would like to extend a special welcome to all our new students and wish you the best of luck in your studies. You are now following in the footsteps of around 55 thousand Icelanders, taking part in shaping our future and the prosperity of our society.

Sex differences in the response of the heart to COVID-19 need to be investigated

The effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the cardiovascular system in men and women need to be further investigated, as there are various indications that there are important sex differences in the effects of the resulting disease, COVID-19. This is what Georgios Kararigas, Professor of Physiology at the School of Medicine of the University of Iceland, says in an Editorial published in Physiological Reviews, a prestigious scientific journal in the field of Physiology and Medicine.

UI a world leader on its 110th anniversary

05/11/2021 - 12:43

Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland, sent the following message to University staff and students today (5 November 2021):

"Dear students and colleagues,

"Mighty oaks from little acorns grow."

So said Björn M. Ólsen, the first Rector of the University of Iceland, in his inaugural address 110 years ago, when the University of Iceland was founded by the Icelandic Parliament.  We can see the truth of these words today as we look back to that tiny university, without even its own building, with just 45 students and 11 members of teaching staff, and think about how it has grown into a dynamic and comprehensive research university with 5 schools, 26 faculties and numerous research centres devoted to finding solutions to pressing challenges.

New branding for the University of Iceland

01/10/2021 - 08:31

To mark the 110 anniversary of the University of Iceland and a new comprehensive strategy, we have made some changes to the University branding. This includes the style of the University logo. The focus is still on the familiar and beloved face of Pallas Athena, goddess of learning and wisdom, but the style has been simplified to make it more compatible with digital media which has become the main channel for the logo and almost all University promotional material.
