Better lava flow forecasting

31/03/2022 - 10:30

When the volcanic eruption at Fagradalsfjall on the Reykjanes peninsula began just over a year ago, people naturally starting thinking about the risk of the lava reaching nearby towns and infrastructure, which would have caused significant damage and had a serious impact on human lives and the economy. Various action was taken in an attempt to direct the lava flow along a certain path, preventing it from flowing across the road Suðurstrandarvegur. This action was based in part on lava flow models developed by scientists at the University of Iceland in collaboration with colleagues at the Icelandic Meteorological Office and around the world.

For Teachers

Students that require accommodation must contact the UI Student Counselling Centre (UISCC), submit the necessary documents from a medical specialist and sign a written agreement (contract) about the accommodation to be provided. The agreement must be finalised by 1 October in order for services to be put in place for exams in the autumn semester and by 1 March for exams in the spring semester.

The agreement must be signed by the student and a University counsellor and both parties retain a copy. Students are encouraged to scan their physical copy into a computer or take a good quality photograph of it so that they can keep a digital copy as well.

Quality Board for Icelandic Higher Education confirms the strength of UI's performance

04/10/2021 - 09:46

A team of experts at the Quality Board for Icelandic Higher Education has praised many aspects of operations at the University of Iceland in a new institution-wide review published last week. The review also identifies several areas for improvement that will help the University advance both in Iceland and internationally.

This is the second institution-wide review of the University of Iceland, the first having taken place just over five years ago. The review team was made up of international experts as well as one student representative and the goal was to enhance the quality of Icelandic universities. The review is based on University-led subject-level reviews and in-depth data, although due to the COVID-19 pandemic the team was unable to conduct a site visit and instead held remote meetings with various parties at the University.

Ample opportunity for UI in the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Over the past five years, the UN Sustainable Development Goals have been guiding principles in international affairs, ever since the member states agreed to work towards them in September 2015. The SDGs, which total 17 and apply for the period 2016-2030, apply to all areas of society, since they are intended, for example, to combat global poverty and hunger and promote economic prosperity, peace, universal human rights, and sustainability in all areas to benefit the climate and environment.
