Symposium - Community Co-Creation

16. November 2023 - 14:00 to 16:00

Borgarbókasafnið Grófinni

Where are spaces of encounters in our communities? Are these spaces similar in rural and urban areas or do they even exist in our local environment?

We welcome you at the library in Grófin after an exploration journey around Iceland that included stops in libraries, museums, cultural centers, and artist residencies in urban and rural regions. At the symposium you will get to know the partners and their experiences in the project Community Co-Creation, where they explored the possible impact of art methods in working with immigrant communities.

Inclusion, marginalisation and human rights at University Equality Days

09/02/2024 - 08:48

The right to protest; inclusion in politics and society; actions against hate speech; challenges in Icelandic multicultural society; a concert with Elín Hall, and white privilege are among the subjects tackled at the annual Equality Days taking place in Icelandic universities from 12 to 15 February.

Equality Days have  long established themselves as a progressive, radical and forward-thinking forum approaching equality matters from diverse angles. They are now held for the sixteenth time. The aim of Equality Days is to stimulate discourse on equality in the broad sense of the word, and to make these issues visible at the University and society at large.

This year's theme is inclusion, marginalisation and human rights under threat with over twenty events taking place over 4 days in Icelandic universities, either on site, live streamed - or both.

Revealing patterns of genetic diversity in the brown trout of Lake Þingvallavatn and the surrounding area

21/09/2023 - 09:12

In the first study of its kind, scientists at the University of Iceland and Marine and the Freshwater Research Institute have investigated the genetic structure and diversity of the brown trout populations in Lake Þingvallavatn and other parts of the Ölfusá watershed. They have discovered that genetic relatedness between trout populations reflects the connectivity of the waterways and formation of impassable waterfalls. Their findings were published this September in the journal PeerJ. The scientists aimed to map the genetic diversity of brown trout in the western part of the Ölfusá watershed and use the genetic data to answer questions about relatedness between fish in different locations and effective population sizes.

The start-up company Akthelia Pharmaceuticals and the University of Iceland are leading a project that has been awarded a grant of EUR 6 million, the equivalent of almost ISK 900 million, from the European Union. The project aims to develop new drugs that will boost the body's natural immune response or innate immunity in order to combat the growing threat from antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

The project, which is called IN-ARMOR, is a collaboration between nine universities and research institutes and seven companies in nine different European countries. IN-ARMOR is an attempt to tackle the global issue of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, a problem that the World Health Organization has defined as one of the ten biggest threats to public health in the world.
