Abstract
Traditional thiirane synthesis by a nucleophilic attack of a sulfur donor on an epoxide followed by a ring closure is a two-step process that has certain limitations where multiple products are expected to form. A much less explored reaction is a metal mediated sulfur transfer reaction of a sulfur atom to the corresponding alkene. A general synthetic method has yet to be established. To study metal mediated sulfur atom transfer reactions, two different types of molybdenum complexes with phosphinoyldithioformate ligands were synthesized and characterized. The complexes were studied in reactions with propylene sulfide and cyclohexene sulfide. The results confirm that the complex is able to transfer sulfur efficiently and holds promise for further studies of metal mediated sulfur transfer to form thiiranes.
