Veröld – House of Vigdís, #007
Transculturation involves the ongoing process of transformation that an individual experiences when two (or more) different cultures come into contact. It is a gradual progression of change that be contextualized in smaller, local communities, or extended to larger levels, such as the entire national community. Individual outcomes may be punctuated by experiences of connection and inclusion, as well as conflict and exclusion. The goal of this workshop is to focus on language as a readily available tool for local communities, including classrooms, to emphasize inclusive possibilities that enrich local and national communities rather than perpetuating practices and experiences of exclusion. The practical focus is on teaching strategies and cooperative learning activities that foreign language teachers and teachers of Icelandic as an additional language can implement directly in their own classrooms. Participants will become familiar with concepts such as transculturation, inclusive education in the broad sense of the word, and communicative language teaching, and cooperative learning. They will be asked to link these concepts to their own practice through discussion, interactive group work designing learning activities, and reflection on professional practice. Materials to fulfill these goals will be provided by the workshop facilitators, and activities developed during the workshop will be shared amongst all participants.
