On Monday, June 29, the University of Iceland consortium will be formally established. The ceremony takes place at Hólar in Hjaltadalur, where the Minister of Culture, Innovation and Higher Education, the Rector of the University of Iceland, and the Rector of Hólar University sign an agreement establishing the consortium.
On 1 June, the Icelandic Parliament approved a bill on university consortia, enabling the University of Iceland and Hólar University to unite under the University of Iceland University Consortium. The consortium will formally commence operations on 1 July. Under the new legislation, the University of Iceland will become a consortium university, while Hólar University will operate as an affiliated institution under the name The University of Iceland at Hólar.
The new legislation marks a turning point in higher education in Iceland. The consortium is intended to enhance collaboration between the two universities, expand research, teaching, and support services, and create more opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and development in higher education nationwide.
