Abstract

Traffic congestion has been an increasing problem in Iceland for the last 20 years. Preliminary estimates from 2017 and 2019 are shown and the economic impact discussed. Basic variables of the traffic stream and data sources are discussed, especially particle tracking using GPS technology. The use of time series analysis is presented, associated error margins are formulated and used to define the minimum sampling frequency in handling the nonlinear problem of finding the average congestion time  in the Reykjavik capital area. Sources of traffic congestion and possibilities of improvement are touched upon.
