An Icelandic ID number is essential to living and working in Iceland. You will need an ID number to open a bank account, recieve a tax card, etc.
Nordic citizens, EU/EEA and Swiss citizens need to apply for an Icelandic ID number (“kennitala”, also called a social security number) at Registers Iceland once they arrive in Iceland.
PLEASE NOTE THAT APPLYING FOR AN ID NUMBER IS NOT THE SAME AS REGISTERING YOUR LEGAL DOMICILE, and vice versa. However, both are done at Registers Iceland and can usually be done at the same time.
Other citizens will receive their ID number through the residence permit application process. If you are staying in Iceland only temporarily and are not applying for a residence permit, please seek assistance from the International Office.
