Where do I get a copy of my diploma?

Diplomas and diploma supplements are never reissued. Students can bring the originals to the University Centre Service Desk and request a certified copy of both diplomas and diploma supplements, which can cost from ISK 350 and up to 1400. A graduation transcript is available by order at the University Centre Service Desk. The order can be placed in person, by email (haskolatorg@hi.is) or by telephone (+354) 525 5800. The transcript, which costs ISK 350, can be collected the next afternoon, upon presentation of personal identification documents. Transcripts can be sent by post to the student´s registered permanent residence. No documents are sent via email.

Can I get a description of my courses?

Yes, descriptions of courses are available at the University Centre Service Desk upon presentation of personal identification documents. Please note that in some cases, old course descriptions are unavailable.

The price of course descriptions ranges from ISK 350 to ISK 1,750 depending on the number of courses. Course descriptions can be sent by post to the student's registered permanent address. No documents are sent via email.

Where do I get confirmation of admission?

Various certificates are available at the University Centre Service Desk upon presentation of personal identification documents. A confirmation of registration costs ISK 350.

Where do I get various certificates, such as for rental subsidies, union refund, maternity leave, the Icelandic Student Loan Fund, preschools, unemployment benefits, etc.?

Where do I get a student card?

Student cards are both ID and discount cards. Students apply for the card in Ugla and select if they want the card to give additional access to one University building outside its usual opening hours. The access card cost ISK 1,500 but the other card is free of charge.

Please note that a card that is without access cannot be changed into an access card later on, a new card has to be issued. If you wish to get a new card please email the request to studentakort@hi.is so that a new application can be made available in your Ugla.

The holder of the access card gains additional access to one of the clusters as listed below:

During exam periods access cards open doors till 2 am
* West and East entrances to Haskolatorg are available for entry and from there access
to Gimli, Logberg and Oddi is unrestricted.

The access card costs ISK 1,500 of which ISK 1,000 are refunded upon return of the card at the end of study.

Please note that the student cards are not issued yearly but renewed with a sticker at the University Centre Service Desk and at the Service Centre in the School of Education in Stakkahlíð.

How do I register for courses at the University of Iceland?

Students are individually responsible for their studies and students at the University of Iceland register for courses through Ugla Intranet. Annual registration for continued study the following academic year is in March in Ugla. In the beginning of each semester students can also change their course selection in Ugla. How do I drop courses at the Univerisity of Iceland?

Students are individually responsible for their studies and students at the University of Iceland can drop from their courses through Ugla Intranet (My Owl --> My Courses --> Drop).  The deadline for dropping autumn semester courses is October 1st.  For the spring semester the deadline is February 1st.

Do I need to register for examinations?

A registration for a course is the same as a registration for an examination. The only examinations that require separate registration are makeup examinations due to illness and resit examinations.

How do I cancel an examination registration?

When a student drops a course he or she is no longer registered for corresponding examinations. Students can drop courses in Ugla Intranet (My Owl --> My Courses --> Drop).  The deadline for dropping autumn semester examination is October 1st.  For the spring semester the deadline is February 1st

What if I am ill at the time of the examination?

In order to avoid failing the course, a medical certificate must be handed in to the University Centre Service Desk within three days of the final examination (not including the day of the exam). If the third day falls on a weekend or holiday, you must hand in the medical certificate the next working day as follows:

Before you hand in the medical certificate you have to write the course name and number on the certificate.

To take makeup exams, students must register in Ugla Intranet 1-2 days after handing in the medical certificate. If the exam is a mid-term exam, a medical certificate shall be submitted to the faculty office or to the teacher in question.

What if I fail in an exam?

If you fail an examination you may resit the examination when a general examination is next held in the course and no later than within a year. In addition, faculties may, in consultation with the Director of Examinations, arrange special resit examinations in individual courses. Such special resit examinations are intended solely for students who previously have sat an examination in the respective course.

Students pay a fee of ISK 6,000 for each resit exam they register for.

What do I do if I want to take a leave of absence for one year?

Students that wish to take a leave of absence must seek the permission of their respective faculties. When the permission has been granted, they must bring the faculty's confirmation of this to the University Centre Service Desk and pay an ISK 10,000 permission fee.

What do I do if I want to quit my study at the University of Iceland?

When students want to quit the University of Iceland, they have to hand in a written statement regarding the matter. That can be done either by writing an email to the Student Registration Office (nemskra@hi.is) or by going to the University Centre Service Desk and fill out a form that confirms the student´s resignation from the University.

I lost my Ugla Intranet password - what can I do?

You can come to the University Centre Service Desk and receive a new password upon presentation of personal identification documents. A new password can also be issued at the IT Help Desk at the University Centre and in Stakkahlíð. Please note that passwords will not be sent via email.

Name change for Trans students

Trans students at the University of Iceland, who cannot change their name legally, can request a name change within the university. Students contact the University Centre Service Desk.

Who can assist me in my choice of study?

The Student Counselling and Career Centre is open to all. The Student Counselling and Career Centre offers open consultation hours during which the office on the 3rd floor of the University Centre can be visited without prior appointment.

The open consultation hours are Mon-Thurs 13-15:30 and Fri 10-12. Students at the University of Iceland can also book an appointment with a counsellor by telephone on (+354) 525 4315.

How do I make an appointment with a counsellor at the Student Counselling and Career Centre?

Anyone can come to the open consultation hours at the Student Counselling and Career Centre, which are Mon-Thurs 13-15:30, and Fri 10-12.

Students at the University of Iceland can also book an appointment with a counsellor by telephone on (+354) 525 4315.

How do I register for courses held by the University Student Counselling and Career Centre?

Students can register for courses and seminars held by the USCCC at the University Centre Service Desk (tel. (+354) 525 5800). Please note that course fees must usually be paid upon registration.

Where do I apply for a preschool place for my child?

Where do I apply for student housing?

Student Housing offers students at the University of Iceland various sizes of rental accommodation at a fair price. All further information can be found at Félagsstofnun Stúdenta.

Where do I get a bus pass?

Applications for Student bus passes are made online at www.straeto.is

All students at the University of Iceland that have an Icelandic ID number can purchase Student bus pass at www.straeto.is. But registered students who are not yet domiciled in Iceland and don‘t have an Icelandic ID number (i.e. foreign students with temporary residence but staying for more than one semester) can, in the beginning of the semester, go to Strætó bs. in Mjódd (Þönglabakki 4) between 2 pm and 4 pm with their photo on a USB key. Cash payments must be the exact amount and they accept card payments as well.

Students staying only one semester can buy a regular 3 month bus pass at Strætó´s various service centres, at 10-11 stores or at Mjódd.

 

How do I connect to the wireless network (eduroam)?

All students get free access to the wireless network (eduroam) at the University. There are detailed instructions on how to connect on the Computing Services webpage. If you are having difficulties establishing network connection the IT Help Desk can provide assistance. You can approach the IT Help Desk at the University Centre and in Stakkahlíð, by email help@hi.is or by telephone (+354) 525 4222.
